A MAN was hospitalised and went on to suffer from post-traumatic stress and pain for months after he was kicked in the testicles by a 19-year-old woman, a court heard yesterday.
Samantha Flaherty pleaded guilty to assaulting Martin Nohilly (20), causing him harm, and to breaching the peace in a car park in Galway on August 31 last year.
The case was adjourned to give the accused time to pay €1,500 compensation to the victim.
Insp Sean Glynn told Galway District Court a lot of people were watching boy racers perform in the car park of the shopping centre on Galway's Headford Road late at night. He said the accused was part of a group of intoxicated girls.
One of them had words with the injured man, and, as he was turning to walk away, Flaherty, hit him in the face and then kicked him in the testicles.

Additional to the story
A man who was "physically sick" over gardai after being kicked in the groin area by a drunk and hot-tempered young woman had to take five weeks off work and suffered from posttraumatic stress. The Galway District Court heard last Monday how the force of the blow was so severe and painful that the unfortunate man was "physically sick" on gardai who assisted in bringing him to hospital. The 19-year-old woman responsible for the assault was told to keep her feet firmly on the ground in future and ordered to pay 1,500 in compensation. Samantha Flaherty, was brought before Judge Mary Fahy to face charges of threatening and abusive behaviour and assault causing harm at Terryland car park, Headford Road, on August 31, 2008. Inspector Sean Glynn told the court that an altercation involving a group of girls had taken place in the car park and the injured party had words with the defendant's sister. The man, described as being "quiet", then turned away and Flaherty started shouting at him. When he turned around he got a slap in the face and a kick. The inspector said that the man suffered "severe pain in the groin area". At UHG the injured party was given pain killers and on September 10 he visited the doctor. Reading from the doctor's report Inspector Glynn said that the man "was suffering from pain and discomfort to the testicular area and post traumatic stress". The inspector also said that the defendant has no previous convictions. Defence solicitor Ciara Macklin said that her client had been very drunk on the night. "This man was in a row with her sister. He was trying to mind his own business. She [Flaherty] intervened and gave a kick and he happened to turn around at the same time," said Ms Macklin. "She should have kept her foot on the ground," replied Judge Fahy. The injured party later appeared in court and told Judge Fahy that as a result of his injuries he had to take a total of five weeks off work. During the judge's enquiries he said that he did not need to have more tests but that he had lost out on wages of 350 per week and had to pay the cost of medication. He then accepted the defendant's apology and the offer of compensation. Judge Fahy then adjourned the case to October 7 for the first payment of 750. A further adjournment will follow for another 750 and if paid a monetary penalty will apply.
