In Muay Thai sparring, I've taken a few inadvertent kicks to the groin (had cup on luckily), and I can say there's two good defenses against the front kick to the groin (great demo in above video, perfect form):
#1) Side-to-Side Movement: this won't only disallow your opponent a clear shot at your groin, but you've also taken away the stable base for them to fire off an effective front kick, because they constantly have to adjust their footwork around your side to side movement (against a right-legged front kicker, like in above video, you would feint and "bob-step" to her left side). Moreover, learning how to strike from constant side to side movement is a boxing / kickboxing essential skill. #2) Low Probing Front Kick: a la Royce Gracie's early UFC fights, a lead-legged probing ("poking") front kick to either of your opponent's thighs will inhibit most any effective launch or chambering of a kick to your groin, AND you might hit their groin as they open themselves up trying to hit yours. This of course will allow you a variety of follow up with strikes.
