Of course its honest, what else are balls there for XD.

For real though its useful in self defense, as long as you know how to keep your balance (kicks are powerful but the downside is that you risk getting knocked over)

It's not a great idea to rely too heavily on nutshots for self defense.  There not as easy to land in a high stress situation when you're being attacked (practice helps of course ;) ) and  adrenaline can dampen the pain at least for enough time for him to retaliate. But balls are obviously a viable target and if you have opening you should absolutely go for it. You might get lucky and completely immobilize him or at least slow him down.

What does he mean by honest? Does he think it won't work? Adrenaline plays into it but I would think hitting an attacker in the nuts would be effective.

He is right. Its just on self defense since the attacker its always stronger, armed, and maybe faster, the ideal its be sneaky and treacherous so you caught the attacker out of guard and beat him with the less risk.
