The Underground League

A few months back, I found this great site called "The underground League" (underground.heroku.com). It was a nice ballbusting game site where one could create characters and ballbust or get ballbusted by other characters. I was wondering if anyone of you tried it.

It is down since the past couple of months, because the creator couldn't pay the fees required to keep the site running. But I don't remember any links for donations so that we could help him/her out.

Did you come across this site?

I loved that site, but I think it's down for good. I think the name of the guy running it was poiu. Maybe you can contact him somehow about it?

I am sorry about replying so late... I really had a busy week.

Yeah, I loved it too. Poiu was a character regularly topping the leaderboards..I only learned later that he was the creator of the site. I will send him an email asking about it, hopefully he will answer.

If you are missing it too much, I found a blog where the guy has created a lot of  games about ballbusting and some other stuff I am not really into...  One game is called "Amazons" and is similar to Underground league.

I never tried that game, but I have to wonder - did it really get so much traffic that a single Heroku dyno wasn't enough to handle the load?  Heroku is totally free for a single dyno + a weak-ish Postgres instance per app.  Wonder if he was doing something with background workers, or if it was just the load?  Pretty impressive if it was the latter. 

Discussion here doesn't say much, but the app is old enough that the URL is still *.heroku.com rather than *.herokuapp.com as you'd currently get.  Maybe the author just needs to port it to the Cedar stack to get free hosting again?

Hey! I think the site did have a lot of traffic. I saw lots of characters and lots of people there. Maybe you have a point. I mean, requiring to shut down your website because it gets too much traffic....a difficult decision to take.

I don't know about the in-depth tech stuff, but I had lots of characters on the site and if It came back up intact I would just die from happiness!

If it was from poiu, this game http://pokemonbusting.heroku.com/ (that is under maintainance, according from that I just tried it and it didn't work) is from him as well - maybe one of the is coming back some time. poiu is in yoda's forum as well as he seems to have 2 storie sites (http://bustedspuds.blogspot.co.at/2010/05/busting-league-day-one.ht...) and http://furryballbusting.blogspot.co.at/?zx=5cb233ef1ee711bc), where I found at least one email address ([e-mail]). So you could try to contact him, if you want, and he could tell you directly...

Yeah, that one was just the link to the Pokemon one. The bigger one was called The Underground League and it was here: http://underground.heroku.com/home . I tried emailing him earlier last year but I didn't get a reply. :'(

I think there was an issue with the database requiring too many rows, and the hosting service wanted to charge him a subscription fee to maintain it.  There was a brief campaign on another forum to find donation or alternatives, but I don't think it came to much.  The author offered to let anyone have the "code" if they want to host it somewhere, but I don't think anyone took him up on that either.

Ahhhh...  yeah, the free PG instance has a max of 10k rows.  Gotta pay $9/mo to get 10mil rows.
